Formative Evaluation of Instruction:
The Law of Supply and Demand

Source: Class Project: EME5603 Introduction to Systematic Instructional Design (Fall 2018)

Skills Demonstrated:

  • Design and develop formative and summative evaluation plans.
  • Conduct a formative evaluation of an instructional intervention.
  • Apply appropriate qualitative and quantitative data collection methods.
  • Construct valid & reliable data collection tools.
  • Collect, analyze, and summarize data.

Description: For this project I designed and developed two formative evaluations: A One-to-One Formative Evaluation and a Small Group Formative Evaluation. For both evaluations I conducted a Learner Analysis, designed instruments and procedures for collecting data, and developed a plan for improvement.

Data collected was both qualitative (attitude surveys) and quantitative (pre- and post-tests). The post-evaluation results were gathered and analyzed to align revisions regarding valid and reliable survey questions, level of difficulty for audience, and effectiveness of instructional materials.

Deliverables:

Examples:

Example 1: Formative Evaluation Data Analysis
This excerpt shows a quantitative analysis of survey results measuring the attitudes of student towards a unit of instruction. This formative evaluation was used to inform improvements to the design of the instruction.

Example 2: Student Attitude Questionnaire
This collection tool was designed to ensure consistency of the data and results, and accuracy in the items measured.
